Petra (ancient Greek "rock, rocky massif", probably Arabic Reqmu "the red"), a ruined site in today's Jordan, was the capital of the Nabataean Empire in ancient times. Because of its monumental funerary temple, whose facades were carved directly from the rock, it is considered a unique cultural monument.
