The cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) is the only species in the genus of cockatiels (Nymphicus). Within ornithology, it was long disputed whether the cockatiel within the order of the parrots (Psittaciformes) belongs to the family of cockatoos (Cacatuidae) or to the actual parrots (Psittacidae) and is more closely related to other "parakeet species" there.
